Cold Weather Can Be Dangerous For Your Dog

Peanut

We have been having some pretty cold weather lately.  And the Chi-ildren are not to happy about it.  Chihuahuas don’t do well in cold weather, their little bodies just do not have the necessary insulation, especially if their a short hair.  So it’s very important for us to take the time to protect them from the cold.

Chi's 063There are all kinds of clothing available for Chihuahuas, and other dogs.  You can get shirts, dresses, coats, booties, and just about anything else you could imagine.  The sources are plentiful on the internet, but you really need to know what size to get.  Most pet clothing is sized by the weight of animal it will fit.  For instance, a shirt that fits Peanut who is 3 pounds, would never fit Babe who is 11 pounds.   We have bam 051found the best clothing has no straps, snaps or other items to secure.  Mainly because they dogs are less likely to try and chew them up.

You should also pay attention to the attitude of your dog.  Many of them do not like clothing, and it takes time to get them used to it.  Don’t force them, just keep trying them on slowly, and be patient, eventually they’ll get used to it.  Persistence is the key.  Sooner or later they will realize it’s for their own Chi's 004good.  We have two Chi’s that are very susceptible to the cold weather, Callie and Peanut.  Both have shorter hair than any of the others, and being as small as they are its often harder to find clothes to fit them.

Chi's 007 Another thing they like on a cold day, heck any day, is to have a blanket to curl up under.  Chihuahuas seem to love to crawl under the blankets, and bundle themselves up.  Even on a warm day You will find Callie under the blanket on the couch.  We keep a blanket on each couch for this reason.  It gives them some warmth, and evidently a feeling of security.  Believe it or not Teco, who’s feet you see above is sound asleep right then.  He loves to sleep on his back and under the blanket.  Babe is another one that has to be under a blanket as much as possible.

kids 146 There is one last thing we do for the Chihuahuas that helps us on cold days.  Peanut, Callie, Teco, and Meeka are all litter box trained.  They don’t have to go outside when it’s cold.  It was pretty easy training them but the others we’re still working on.  Teco and Callie were litter box trained when we got them.  Peanut learned from Callie, and Meeka learned from Peanut.  It is handy being able to put them in their rooms, (kennels) where they each have a litter box when it’s cold.  Then you just wait until they use the litter box, and let them back out.  We even started litter box training Annie’s last litter before they left for their new homes.

So as the weather continues with it’s cold snaps, think of your dogs, and be sure they are safe from the cold.

My chihuahua gets cold easily, but he hates it when I put his sweater on. He won't move a muscle after I put it on him... it's kind of funny and sad. So I just end up wrapping him up in a blanket.

Your "Chi-ildren" are so adorable!

Hi Caroline, there are some of our Chis that are not too happy about it. I think they all start out with that "if I sit still, maybe it'll fall off" thing. It's hard sometimes, because you feel sorry for them but if you just leave it on, eventually they'll start moving around. You might try putting one on Cocco, then put him in another room. Walk into the living room and sit down. I would bet you won't have to wait long before he comes in and jumps in your lap. Just leave the shirt on for a short time, and then do it again another day making the time a little longer.

Hello! Dobby seems to understand the warmth of clothes, so he doesn't usually fight me or go "dogatonic" when I put something on him... although I do have the same difficulty finding clothes that fit him well!

Try barkindogclothes.com for your little ones- they will make custom-sized shirts and sweatshirts. That's where Dobby's hoodie is from, and it's our favorite!

Love,
S and D

Hey Sharon. It's a good thing, Dobby doesn't look like there's much hair there, kind of like Peanut.

I'll check out that site, custom shirts huh.

"dogatonic" LOL

Our puppies are long haired, but they still get very chilly in our Maine winter, and there are many days we can't take them outside due to below 0 temps. They've been decent about pad training, but we're still working on it.

@ Mike, LOL, yep they have to wear their shirts or sweaters when it's cold.

@ Sarcasta Mom, I know what you mean. That is one reason we started working on the litter box training. It makes life so much easier for us.

@ Benallos, Thanks, It's fun to get them dressed up sometimes. I'm not sure if they would agree with me though, LOL.

I don't have a chihuahua, but I do have two cats that enjoy getting dressed up. :-) They don't need it for the cold, but it amuses us as owners to do it.
We've got a skunk outfit and a Mrs. Claus outfit. Both cats will walk around with their little hats on. They love the attention.

Hey Pearl, That's cool, I didn't know that cats got dressed up to. I bet they are fun to watch with their little antics. The Chi's don't really appreciate it, but they do tolerate our nonsense.

I have two short haired chihuahuas and they both get cold and hate going outside in the fall and winter. Sweaters do help
