Another Simple, Sleepy, Nice Sunday

Great Danes and Chihuahuas by David Shankbone,...

Image via Wikipedia

The kids are all outside enjoying the nice weather and playing in the yard.  They manage to drag most of the toys out there, then ignore them to run and chase each other around like crazy animals.  Taking care of 8 Chihuahuas is a very fun, interesting, and complicated task at times.  People are always surprised at how aggressive a Chihuahua can be.  They are known for their big attitude, but it never fails to garner a laugh when someone walking their big dog is confronted at the fence by a fiercely growling and barking Chihuahua.

The kids have all been pretty comical of late.  Annie who believes she has to mother everybody, even though she is not any of them’s mother, has been enjoy pestering Babe. Would youAnnie always cleans Babes eyes and ears on a regular basis.  Babe in return snarls and grumbles about it, but never stops her.  We have just about decided they are love growls. Annie manages to make her way around to all the kids, making sure they are keeping themselves properly cleaned and up to her high standards.

Meeka has been laying claim to some of the toys, and bringing them back into the house.  She also has been playing more with Teco and Tia, instead of just Peanut and Callie.  She is turning into a very sweet, yet somewhat mischievous youngster. It's Mine

A Little Chihuatude News

Last week, a lot of things have happened here, and I have been taken by surprise because of it.  First Meeka is going to be Chi's 009featured at Famous Chihuahua.  I just hope it doesn’t go to her head.  She has been becoming more “active” than the other dogs, and seems to be fitting in quite well.  The funny part, she is the only Chi out of the group who is not afraid of the cat.

The second thing, is that our RSS feed is going to be added to the DogTime Blog Network.  This site is setting up a network showcasing dog blogs.  We all know there are a ton of them out there, and it will be kind of neat to see a site that will group them all together.  The network is in the process of being set up, but there are some already active.  I am not sure how soon it will be before our feed is up and running there.  Take a few moments, and go to DogTime to check out their site and register.

Now then, Blinda has become pretty active at the Dog Channel309465_thumbThis is like a social community for dogs, you can set up a web page, and go around to visit of member pages.  They also have clubs or groups you can join, like the DC Chi Club, which Callie is a member of.  Blinda has only set up Callie with a page, but has loaded pictures of all the others to her scrapbook. You can view Callie’s page by clicking here.

The DC Chi Club is setting up a virtual premier for Beverly Hills Chihuahua.  They will have “Dates”, and go on a virtual shopping Chi's 063trip before the premier.  Callie is going with Sebastian, and Blinda has been getting her ready.  She has a pretty new dress and everything.

I have become fairly involved with Plurk, which is similar to Twitter, but runs a horizontal time line, with a simple reply function.  It is like carrying on a whole bunch of conversations all at once.  There are a bunch of pet people there and people from all walks of life.  The conversation topics vary from the incredibly simple and funny to some pretty intellectual topics.

Come by and visit Callie’s page, and visit Plurk to find out what they are all about.  By the way Beverly Hill’s Chihuahua opens next weekend in theaters, I can’t wait.

Just as a side note, I am working on a post about naming your dog.  We have a data base with over 800 unique and unusual dog names that Blinda and I came up with.  I will probably set it up so if you send me an email request for the list of names, I’ll send you a copy as an attachment.  Some day I will figure out how to do an e-book that can be downloaded. Until then if you want a copy of the names we have, send me an email with “names” in the subject line at chihuatude@gmail.com.

Something serious for a change.

Have you ever had to take you dog, cat or other pet to the emergency vet.  We have a couple of times, and let me tell you it is not cheap.  It never fails that when one of the dogs gets hurt its on a weekend, and our regular vet is closed.  We have no choice but to get into the car a drive to the emergency vet.
One thing is true every time, you pay up front before any service is provided, and they are very expensive.  Not very long ago we had to take Sophie in after she got Mastitis when she had her puppies.  That little trip cost us $800.00 because she had to stay overnight and receive IV treatments.  We struggled with how to pay, but eventually managed to come up with the extra money.

You may have noticed this on my sidebar.  Dr. Lucy Pinkston Schroth is working on setting up the Veterinary Emergency Funding Mission.  It will be a non-profit organization established to aid people in getting the emergency treatment needed for their pet.
There are a few things that have to happen before she can really get going.  One of them is establishment of 501(c)3 status.  If any of you know how to help in this process or could provide legal advice, please go by her blog and let her know.  Then there is going to have to be some fundraising.  I’m sure she will have no trouble getting donations, for this is a truly admirable cause.
I know not all of us can afford such exorbitant costs of emergency treatment. That is why I’m going to do all I can to help Dr. Schroth in her endeavors.  I hope anyone who reads this and can help in the process or can donate funds to the Veterinary Emergency Funding Mission, will go to her site and offer assistance.  I plan to find out about creating a donation widget that I will place on my site.

A New Member to the Pack

We just got a new little girl, Mini Meeka, is a chocolate smooth coat.  She is 12 weeks old, and just the sweetest little thing you’ve ever seen.
Mini Meeka
Peanut has already decided he likes her, and won’t leave her side.  I had to explain to him a few times that he can’t have her as a girl friend for at least a year.  I think we will have to keep a close eye on him.
Those awkward first moments
I am afraid of what is going through his mind right now.  He is really taken with Meeka, and has not acted like this before.
Sweet Chocolate Kiss
She looks like one of those girls that is tired of the guys in the bar coming up with stupid pick up lines.
Sweet Love
He did get a few smooches in, the little player.
Hey baby what's up
I think maybe I have been playing the trailer for Beverly Hills Chihuahua a little too much.  Peanut seems to think he is 50 percent lover, 50 percent warrior, and 100 percent Chihuahua.

A Little Summer Fun

We finally got some pictures of the kids playing outside.  Last week before the storms, the Chi’s were spending a lot of time playing outside.  They love the warm weather, and you can find them sunbathing or enjoying a little shade on a regular basis.  Not to mention running up and down the fence barking at all the stray dogs around here.

Annie Mae

Here’s Annie pulling guard duty as usual.  She spend more time watching the street, and making sure no other dogs come up to the fence than just about anything else.  She has such an intense look, almost like she’s concentrating so hard.  She also loves to play with the frogs at night.  It’s really funny, because she will sit there and paw them until they move, and then go crazy barking.  The poor frogs don’t have any idea what to do.

Tia Marie

Little Tia Maria, would prefer to sit on the porch and enjoy the warmth of the day.  She is not as active as the others, because it might mess up her hair.  I have never seen a Chihuahua so concerned with her own appearance as Tia Maria.  She is our little Diva, and she knows it.

Callie

Callie is our shy girl.  She will not go up to strangers, and acts completely unlike a Chihuahua all the time.  She is her Mommas baby, and can always be found near her Momma.  The only exception to this is in nice weather.  Callie loves to sunbath, and soak up the warmth.  When its hot out you can find her laying around frog legged, enjoying the sunshine.

Teco

Teco, our other Mommas baby, is completely spoiled.  He chases Tia and Callie around all day, and likes the sun also.  He loves to wrestle with Sable and Babe, both of which are twice his size.

Sable

Sable likes to relax in the shade.  She very seldom does any sunbathing.  Sable has finally accepted me, and lets me pet her. As a mater of fact, while in the house she sits beside me and keeps nosing under my hand until I pet her.

Babe

Bug Eyed Babe, who spends every free moment running as fast as she can up and down the fence barking at Destiny in the back yard.  I like to think of Babe as our ADHD child, I have never seen one as hyper.   She is a Daddies girl, and can be found on the couch back behind my head always.

Chi's 012The only one we didn’t get a picture of outside is Peanut.  Tia Callie and him play chase through the yard.  Running so fast you can never get a shot of them.  But here’s a picture of him sticking his tongue out at us.

Now it’s just the 11 of us.

PJ found a home.  He went to a really sweet family that has a little girl who just loved him.   I kind of think the mother loved him a little more than the little girl though.  We normally don’t like to send our Chi’s home with families that have children younger than 5.  But this mother was very cautious and would only let the girl hold him while right next to her.  Little children do not realize who fragile a little Chihuahua can be.  There are tons of stories about how a little child hurt, or worse, a small dog because they were just squeezing them to show love.  We felt comfortable with this family, and the little girl was very well behaved.
bam 070 So now it’s just the 11 of us, our 7 Chihuahuas, 1 Red Healer (Destiny), 1 Cat (Mai Tai), and of course my Wife and I.
I have had a number of people ask me if I like cats.  The answer is yes, I have had cats my whole life.  As a child we always had at least two cats.  When I got home from the service and got my first apartment, I rescued a black cat from our junk yard.  Then through the years kids 089we have had other cats also.
Currently we have only the one, a Bengal Snow Leopard.  He has the most beautiful blue eyes, and softest white pelt with black spots.  We call him our dirty white boy, because he looks like he's been out walking under the truck rubbing on the filthy undercarriage.  He is also one of the most vocal cats I have ever seen.  He regularly talks or has conversations with us.  He used to pets 016 have a brother, Kahlua, but he got sick and crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.  Both cats were large, Kahlua weighed 34 pounds, and Mai Tai weighs 30 pounds. To give you a sense of their size, that throw rug they are laying on is two feet wide.
Mai Tai is a very loving cat, and when he wants attention he will let you know.    He now spends a lot of time in the bedroom away from the Chihuahua's, but does come out to play with them Picture 046 regularly.  Neither cat had or has ever been outside except in a carrier for vet visits.

All gone but one.

Well, the two long haired girls went at one time.  they are going to live with two families that are neighbors, so they get to see each

Tia and Peanuts Babies

other all the time.  I’m going to miss them, because they each started getting a very sweet personality.  The little cream girl was a meany or bully to her siblings, but when held by a person you couldn’t ask for a more loving dog.  The little red long hair was just sweet all the way around.  I think they all got the best part of their mothers personality.

Tia and Peanuts Babies

PJ, is still with us, and getting us more attached to him each day.  He has to be one of the most affectionate puppies we have ever had.  He loves to be held, and will fall right to sleep in your lap.  He has acquired his daddies looks, he will look sideways at you, and you can’t help but laugh.  He loves to play and roughhouse with Momma and Daddy.   One of these

Tia and Peanuts Babies

days he will grow into that huge head of his.  I  think he will become a member of our family, unfortunately people think his big head is a flaw.  I will never understand those thoughts, if they just took the time to get to know him and find out what a sweet boy he is they would just love him.

Mai Tai

Mai Tai likes him also and has been playing with him quite a bit.  PJ is not real sure what to do about Mai Tai but keeps trying to bite his tail.  PJ is very camera shy so its hard to get good pictures of him.  I’ll keep trying to get some pictures of PJ and Mai Tai, because they are so cute, huge cat and tiny dog.
